The business model is a systemic and synthetic representation of the origin of the added value of a company and of its shares between the different stakeholders, over a specific period with respect to specific clearly identified activities.

An innovative business model can help create new markets and allow a company to create and take advantage of new opportunities in existing markets. Creating a business model must not be confused with writing a business plan; the latter is written after the business model and is used more specifically to communicate externally the contents of the action plan and the various concrete operational decisions that are a result of the action plan.
